I recently went through a layoff at my previous job as a marketing coordinator at a tech startup. When I received my severance package, I realized I had no idea that I could negotiate it. I wish I had known that negotiating severance was an option because I felt overwhelmed and just accepted what was offered. I later learned from friends that many people successfully negotiated for better terms, like extended health benefits or a larger payout. If I could go back, I would definitely push for more clarity on the terms and ask for additional support, like career coaching or outplacement services. For those currently in negotiations, I recommend researching common practices and being prepared to advocate for yourself. Hearing real experiences from others would have made a huge difference for me.
