I recently left my job as a line cook at a local restaurant where I had been working on and off since 2020. Over the past three years, I’ve had a total of 4-5 departures from this job, which has left me wondering if it’s even worth trying to go back. I have ASD and other learning disabilities, and since my parents passed away in 2019, I’ve been on social security. During my time at the restaurant, I started as a dishwasher and eventually moved up to a line cook. However, I struggled with communication and often felt out of place among my coworkers and customers. I quit several times, often making excuses for my departures. Now, I’m concerned I might lose my disability benefits, which adds to my anxiety about employment. I know most of the staff is still there, and while I feel weird about asking to return, I believe I know the menu and the job requirements well. Yet, starting fresh at a new place feels daunting, especially since I haven’t completed my high school education and have been unsuccessful in obtaining my GED. It seems like my options are limited, and I’m feeling quite lost about what to do next.
