  1. 1

I recently started a new position as a Marketing Manager after being downsized from my previous role as a VP at another company. The job market for marketers is incredibly tough right now, especially with the rise of AI, and I took this role to support my family, which includes my spouse and three young children. This is the first time in my career that I've had to step down to a more junior position, and I'm struggling with the transition. I'm finding it difficult not to overachieve and to adjust to being a subordinate rather than a leader. My current boss is talented and provides valuable feedback, but often when I propose ambitious ideas to improve our marketing strategies, I'm gently reminded that we need to focus on small, incremental changes due to budget constraints. It's frustrating because I believe that real growth requires more than just minor tweaks. I feel like I need to prove myself by achieving small wins before I can take bigger risks, and I'm trying hard not to be seen as subversive, especially since my role involves a lot of content creation that requires approval for everything I publish. I genuinely like my boss and think she is supportive, but I'm starting to worry that I might not be a good fit for the company. Communication from leadership has been lacking, with no town hall meetings or updates, which adds to my uncertainty. I feel like I'm being managed well in some respects, but poorly in others. I also have some lingering anxiety from my previous layoff, and I want to make a strong impression in this new role. I have diagnosed OCD and am mildly autistic, which complicates my self-assessment. I'm looking for advice on how to approach my work tomorrow and navigate these challenges.
