I recently reflected on the drastic changes in the job application landscape since I last applied for a role. A few years back, I worked at a large Fortune 500 company in a low-cost area, and when I applied for my position, there were only about 20-30 applicants. Fast forward to last month, and I noticed my old role was posted again, but this time it had hundreds of applicants listed on LinkedIn. It's baffling to see how even average corporate roles, which are fully on-site and offer nothing extraordinary in terms of pay or benefits, are attracting such a massive pool of candidates. Curiosity got the better of me, so I checked other job postings from the same company and found a similar trend—every position had hundreds of applicants. I even started looking at various companies and was shocked to discover that this phenomenon is widespread; even niche roles with specific requirements are receiving an overwhelming number of applications. It leaves me wondering if people are just mass applying to everything, if many of these applicants are unqualified, or if there are bots involved. The application count on LinkedIn represents clicks on the application link, but it still seems unreal that a standard corporate job in a low-cost area would garner such attention. A friend mentioned that his engineering team used to receive fewer than 20 applications for internships, but now they’re inundated with over 600 applications. This shift is not only demoralizing but also exhausting, and I’m genuinely curious if any recruiters can shed light on this situation.
