I’m a chronically ill woman facing a tough job market as remote positions seem to be disappearing. I've been living with chronic pain and various health conditions like CFS, POTS, and endometriosis, which make it incredibly difficult for me to work in traditional roles. During the pandemic, I saw a rise in workforce participation among people like me, but now it feels like those opportunities are vanishing. I've posted about my job search in different forums, and the advice I often receive is frustrating and unrealistic given my situation. Suggestions like going to trade school or starting a business don’t take into account my health limitations. I’ve tried starting various small businesses like pet sitting and babysitting, but none have provided me with a stable income. I’m currently facing another layoff and feel completely burned out. The competition for remote jobs is fierce, and it seems that many people who don’t have medical needs are taking the limited available positions. I’ve lost every job that required me to be in the office full-time, and now I feel like I’m running out of options. It’s disheartening to see ableism in hiring practices and the decline of remote work opportunities, especially when so many people with disabilities rely on them to participate in the workforce. I’m in my late 20s and honestly can’t see a future for myself in this economy. Without parental support, I truly don’t know how I would manage.
