I was laid off today along with my entire team and several others due to a new acting CEO's decision to eliminate the transformation department, M&A, and strategy roles. This decision comes after our company had been through a significant turnaround after nearly going bankrupt a few years ago, thanks to a sovereign wealth fund's investment. It's frustrating to see the dismantling of three years of hard work and growth initiatives, especially since this is my first experience with a layoff. The timing couldn't be worse for the job market, which is slow right now with hiring freezes, particularly in strategy and transformation roles. I have a generalist background, having started in corporate finance, then moved to MBB consulting, and later worked at the consulting arm of the sovereign wealth fund and one of their portfolio companies. I also hold a Master's degree in Finance from an Oxbridge university. Despite this strong background, I find the job market challenging, especially since I'm not based in the US or Europe. As I begin my job search, I'm seeking advice on what skills I should focus on developing during this downtime. I've heard a lot about AI and its importance, but I'm unsure about what is genuinely worth learning versus what is just hype. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
