I recently found myself in a situation where I am considering reapplying for a job that I previously turned down. About a year ago, I was offered a position that I was genuinely excited about, but I ultimately declined due to the salary being lower than I was comfortable with at the time. I was also in discussions for a promotion at my current job, which made me hesitant to make a move. During the negotiation process, the hiring manager was supportive and even tried to advocate for a higher salary, but HR was unable to accommodate that request. We parted ways on good terms, and I’ve kept in touch with the hiring manager through LinkedIn, where we’ve had friendly interactions over the past year. Now, my circumstances have changed. My current employer has undergone layoffs and leadership changes, leading to a lot of turnover in my team. I’m not as happy in my role anymore, and my anticipated promotion has been delayed indefinitely due to these layoffs. Recently, I noticed that the same position I had previously declined has reopened, with a few changes in the reporting structure and an increase in the salary band due to a new collective agreement. I reached out to the former hiring manager to inquire about the changes and whether I could reapply. She responded positively, encouraging me to apply and mentioned that she had already informed the hiring committee of my interest. As I prepare to submit my application, I’m curious about how hiring managers view candidates who have previously declined an offer. Would they see this as a red flag, or does the fact that the hiring manager is supportive of my reapplication make it a non-issue?
