I’m currently not fired, but I’m definitely back on the job market after spending 5 years at my company. Recently, there was a significant reorganization within our team. Two people were let go, and about two-thirds of our work has been outsourced to vendors. I, along with another colleague, was demoted from our managerial roles back to regular employees. They allowed us to keep our titles and pay, claiming that we would have so much new work that it was fair to relieve us of our previous responsibilities. However, they couldn’t specify what this ‘new work’ would actually entail. To make matters worse, they introduced new responsibilities for the entire team that seem irrelevant, and my manager, who is now overseeing everyone, clearly doesn’t have the capacity to handle that workload. We’re also spending the next couple of months training and creating documentation for our replacements. Despite being told that only two were fired and that the rest of us are safe, the situation feels anything but secure. I’m particularly concerned since a neighboring department we collaborate with had 90% of their team laid off earlier this year. With all of this uncertainty, I’ve decided to update my resume and finally pursue that project management certification I’ve been putting off. I want to be proactive and start my job search before I find myself in a desperate situation. I’ve heard the job market is tough right now, but I’m hoping for the best.
