I recently started a new job as a mechanical engineer after graduating with my BS in Mechanical Engineering in May. I had an amazing internship at a large food processing equipment company where I thrived as a design engineer intern for almost a year. I loved the work and could see a future there, but it was over 1000 miles from home, and I lacked a support system nearby. So, I made the tough decision to move back home and took the first job I found that offered a decent salary and seemed somewhat interesting. Now, about three months into this new role, I'm feeling incredibly dissatisfied. The work is mundane, and I find myself stuck behind a desk all day with a long commute that adds to my frustration. While the company has great people and good benefits, I'm not excited about what I'm doing, and I feel like I'm wasting my time. I know it's still early, but I can't shake the feeling that this position isn't the right fit for me. I have no significant financial obligations, so I'm considering whether I should be honest with my employer about my feelings or if I should stick it out longer. I'm worried about how leaving after such a short time might look to future employers, but I also see job postings that align much better with my interests and offer similar pay. I feel guilty about potentially wasting anyone's time, but I also recognize that it's just business. I'm looking for advice on whether I should stay put a bit longer or pursue opportunities that excite me more.
