I’ve been trying to help my friend navigate her unemployment situation in Louisiana. She filed for unemployment benefits in 2022 and has been waiting for a hearing date ever since. Recently, the unemployment office requested a dismissal of her case in court, which has left her feeling really discouraged. We learned that starting December 2024, any overpayments due to fraud could lead to a theft charge, and she’s worried about the overpayment from 2022. I keep telling her not to give up, especially since she hasn’t received all the money she was entitled to. She’s scared that once her case is resolved in 2026, they might come after her for that overpayment. I’m just trying to understand if there’s any chance she could face charges and how we can better navigate this process.

I'm currently dealing with a frustrating situation regarding an unemployment overpayment issue in Louisiana. Back in 2022, I appealed a decision from the unemployment workforce related to COVID overpayments. However, I just received a notice stating that my petition has been dismissed due to abandonment, which I find confusing since I haven't heard anything from the court in four years. I called the unemployment office for guidance, but they seemed just as lost as I am. Now I'm left wondering if I need to start the appeal process all over again, even though I still have to pay the overpayment. This whole situation has been incredibly stressful.
