I'm currently unemployed as a system engineer in Gothenburg, Sweden, and to be honest, I'm feeling pretty terrified about the job market right now. I lost my job back in July due to layoffs and have been actively searching for work ever since, but it's now almost November and I'm still without a position. With over five years of professional experience in C++, I thought I would have some stability in my career, but seeing the news about Volvo cutting thousands of jobs, including around 2,000 in Sweden, has only added to my anxiety. The competition in the job market feels incredibly fierce, with many positions attracting an overwhelming number of applicants. It seems like companies are looking for candidates with 8–10+ years of experience, even for roles that shouldn't necessarily require that much. I'm also worried about the additional experienced engineers who will soon be entering this struggling job market, especially here in Gothenburg. I've dedicated years to studying engineering and building up my skills, and now I'm left worrying about how long my savings will last and whether I'll find another job before my financial situation becomes dire. The uncertainty is one of the hardest parts. I have no idea if the job market will improve in six months, a year, or if it will get worse. I know I'm not alone in this; many others are affected by these layoffs, and we're all just trying to make a living. It's exhausting to keep applying for jobs, waiting for responses, facing rejections, and constantly questioning my worth despite my experience. I just needed to vent and share my feelings. Is anyone else in Sweden, especially in tech or engineering, feeling the same way? How are you coping with this challenging job market?
