I recently came across an article discussing the struggles of tech workers making $500k a year who were laid off. Honestly, I found it hard to empathize. I mean, how can someone who has built a lifestyle around such a high income suddenly claim to be struggling? I was laid off at 50 from a tech job in the Bay Area, and while it was tough, I embraced contract work and have managed to enjoy a comfortable retirement thanks to my diligent savings. I can't help but think about the blue-collar workers who don't have the same safety nets or options. Layoffs are tough for everyone, but the disruption of a high-income lifestyle doesn't seem as worthy of sympathy to me. I guess it just feels like a disconnect when some people act like their situation is the end of the world when they had a cushy severance package to fall back on. I remember when I got laid off, I went through the stages of denial and frustration too, but I had a cushion to help me through it. I wish more people would focus on creating an environment where everyone can thrive, rather than just feeling sorry for those who had it easier for longer. It's a complicated situation, and while I understand the shock of losing a job, I think we need to keep perspective on who really needs the support.
