I'm documenting my husband's job search journey. He's a veteran and has applied to hundreds of positions, but has faced significant challenges in getting callbacks. He suspects that his race might be a factor, especially since we live in a small town with a history of racism. Despite his military background, he has limited civilian experience, which seems to be a barrier as most employers are looking for candidates with prior experience and are unwilling to train. Recently, he interviewed at a landscaping company, but we won't know the outcome until next week. Meanwhile, I've been able to find retail jobs, but he hasn't even received a call back from places like McDonald's. I'm feeling helpless as I try to support him through this tough time. He's close to giving up on his job search, and I'm not sure what else we can do. I've been networking through my job, but the feedback I get is that employers want experienced candidates. It's disheartening to see him struggle, especially when the job market seems to be brutal for everyone, not just him. I've heard suggestions about looking into over-the-road driving jobs or even relocating for better opportunities, but it's a tough decision. I'm hoping we can find a way to turn this around.
