I had a job interview today that left me feeling really uncomfortable. I'm a 23-year-old woman, and while the interview started off normally with questions about my education and experience, it quickly took a turn for the worse. The interviewer asked me, "What do your parents do for a living?" I found this question to be quite personal and asked him why it was relevant. He seemed surprised and insisted that he needed to know about my family background. I felt it was inappropriate and expressed that I value my personal boundaries. After I mentioned that both of my parents are retired, he made a comment about my family being respectable and questioned why I seemed embarrassed to answer. I tried to explain that it wasn't about embarrassment but rather about maintaining my privacy. Before I could finish, he interrupted me and started probing about my father, even asking if he would have any issues with me working. This was particularly painful for me because my father passed away, and I didn't want to share such a personal detail during a job interview. In the past, I've had coworkers who used personal information against me, which has made me very protective of my private life. Some people around me think I might be overreacting, but I believe that interview questions should focus on my qualifications and work experience, not my family's background. I'm left wondering if my concerns are valid or if I'm being too distrustful due to my past experiences.
