Tesco

I'm currently working at a restaurant/bar where I handle both floor and bar duties, earning £10.85 an hour. Initially, I was getting over 24 hours a week, but since returning from a planned break, my hours have dropped to about 12–16 a week. I've asked for more hours, but the management has informed me that I will primarily be kept on the floor due to an excess of bar staff, which means I’m only getting two shifts a week. Tips have also been minimal, averaging around £10 a month, with my best month being £40. With university starting in late September, I need to cover costs for tuition, rent, my car, and food, so these reduced hours are becoming a significant issue. Additionally, my relationship with my colleagues and boss has soured; I feel like I'm being sidelined while others receive more shifts. The late hours, especially on weekends when I finish around 2–3am, are taking a toll on me as well. I have an interview lined up for a Tesco role that pays £13.28 an hour, with shifts from Thursday to Sunday, which aligns with my current schedule. The latest I would finish is 8pm, a considerable improvement over my current late nights. However, this position is temporary, with a 12-week contract mentioned, and the commute is longer at about 30 minutes by bus. My family believes that leaving my current job for a temporary retail position might not be wise, and I can see their point. However, staying in my current role feels increasingly unbeneficial given the low hours, poor tips, and a stressful work environment. I'm also considering the possibility of juggling both jobs while the Tesco position is temporary, which could provide a safety net if the Tesco role ends after 12 weeks. Yet, I'm concerned about managing both jobs alongside starting university, especially if the shifts overlap.
