I recently went through the final round of interviews for an internal role at my company that I believed I was highly qualified for. Unfortunately, I was passed over in favor of an external candidate who, according to the hiring manager, had more 'direct experience.' This situation has left me feeling quite confused and frustrated, especially after seeing the new hire's background. They appear to have less relevant experience and education compared to mine, and they also lack several qualifications that were highlighted during my interviews as crucial for the role. What makes it even harder to digest is that this new hire is the same age as me and early in their career, which leads me to question what I might be missing in my own professional journey. The only possible reason I can think of for this decision is that they are located in the same state as the office, while I am not. However, the position is fully remote, and other team members are based in different states, so that reasoning feels weak. When I received the news, the hiring manager expressed a desire to stay in touch, which I appreciated, but now I’m left wondering if that was a genuine offer or just a polite way to soften the blow of rejection. I'm contemplating whether I should take this as a cue to start looking for opportunities elsewhere or if I should remain hopeful about future roles within the company. Has anyone else faced a similar situation?
