Reflections on a surprising LinkedIn recommendation from my recent manager after layoffs

I was recently laid off during a reorganization at my company, where I had several bosses throughout my time there. My most recent manager, who I hadn't worked with for long, surprisingly wrote me a positive LinkedIn recommendation. After that, he asked me to write one in return, which caught me off guard. Initially, I wasn't very impressed with him, but as we developed a better working relationship, I started to appreciate his leadership. Unfortunately, just as I was beginning to enjoy working under him, the reorg happened. I'm curious if anyone else has had a manager request a recommendation after giving one. It feels a bit odd, and I can't help but wonder if he senses instability in the company and is looking to secure his own future, especially since many of his previous direct reports have already left.
