Contemplating Reconnecting with Former Managers for Job Opportunities

Today, I found myself contemplating whether I should reach out to some of my former managers and higher-ups after my layoff from XYZ Company. It's been a while since I left, and I’m unsure if it feels awkward to reconnect after so many years. I’m torn between wanting to ask them about potential job opportunities and fearing that it might come off as tacky. I’ve seen others do it successfully, where they simply send a friendly message checking in and subtly inquire about openings. I’m considering crafting a short, neutral message that expresses my hope that they’re doing well and asking if they might know of any opportunities. Has anyone else tried this? What did you say in your messages?
