I recently suffered a serious injury while attending a work social event that involved sports. I tore a ligament and can barely walk, relying on crutches to get around my home. I have a doctor's appointment scheduled for tomorrow, but I've been warned that recovery could be lengthy and may require surgery, which I hope to avoid. For now, I was allowed to work remotely for the next two days, but my boss informed me that I cannot continue to work from home after Monday. This arrangement was made directly with my boss and not through HR, which has left me uncertain about whether I should go through HR for accommodations or simply request sick leave. I'm really anxious about the possibility of losing my job. My office is not easily accessible, as it’s located on a corporate campus with steep stairs and long distances between buildings. I also can’t drive right now, and taking an Uber would be financially burdensome. I know I could perform my job at about 95% efficiency from home, but the company has strict in-person attendance policies. I’m contemplating whether I should bypass discussions with my boss and go straight to HR to discuss my need for accommodations or sick leave. Is it reasonable to expect someone in my condition to struggle to get to the office when it would take me an hour to hobble there? That's where I'm at right now.
