I recently went through an extensive 8-round interview process for a position at a large and prestigious company. During the initial HR interview, I was informed that the salary range for the role was between $75,000 and $90,000. I made it clear that, based on my current compensation of $82,000 (after a small merit raise), I would need an offer of at least $85,000 to even consider the position. The HR representative assured me that she would note this down and move me forward in the process. After completing four reference checks and multiple interviews, I was shocked to receive an offer of only $76,000. This was not just below my minimum requirement, but also $6,000 less than what I currently make. I expressed my disappointment and explained that I couldn't accept a salary that represented a step backward in my career. Unfortunately, the HR director stated that the offer was firm and there would be no room for negotiation. I ultimately decided to turn down the offer, even though the role seemed appealing and the company had a strong reputation. I applied out of boredom and curiosity, but now I'm second-guessing my decision. Was it the right choice to walk away from such a well-known company, even if they didn't respect my salary expectations? I feel like I was misled during the process, and I can't afford to take a pay cut.
