I am feeling extremely nervous about quitting my job tomorrow. I've decided that it's best to give my notice now, especially with the holidays approaching. My manager has been difficult to deal with; she’s fine most of the time, but when she's stressed, she can be really awful. For instance, she demands that I use a half day of PTO just to leave an hour early for a rare commitment, even if I offer to come in early or skip lunch. The culture in my department is also frustrating. Recently, my department head scolded everyone for leaving at 4:55 PM one day, despite the fact that we often work evenings and weekends without compensation. I don’t typically leave early, but that email made me really angry and contributed to my decision to leave. I have a new job lined up that pays more and will be a boost for my career, so I’m excited about that, but I do feel guilty about leaving. My boss has relied on me and has been mentoring me into a leadership role, even if I’m not officially recognized in that way. I think she genuinely likes me and has no idea that I’m unhappy, so I know this will be a shock to her and the team. I confided in a couple of coworkers, and while they supported my decision, they also warned me that it might cause a meltdown in the department. I’m just looking for support and the right words to say when I hand in my notice. I’ve only been here for a little over a year, which feels bad, but I know this place isn’t right for me.
