I recently accepted a job at my church in Texas, but I quickly realized that the situation was more complicated than I initially thought. I was offered a position that was supposed to be a 1099 contractor role, but this detail was only mentioned in an email and not in the contract. When I went in to sign the offer letter, I was told verbally that my hours would change and that I wouldn't be working the full hours listed in the contract until a second position opened up. This inconsistency made me uncomfortable, and I started to research the implications of being classified as a 1099 contractor. I discovered that they can't dictate my schedule or job duties, which made me feel even more uneasy. Less than 24 hours after signing, I emailed them to withdraw my acceptance. The contract stated that it was binding for the academic year, but also mentioned that employment could be terminated at any time. I felt trapped in this confusing situation. After I informed them of my withdrawal, I received multiple calls and emails, including one stating that I would be hired as a W-2 employee instead of a 1099 contractor, which was a complete turnaround from what I was originally told. Now I'm left wondering if I'm obligated to work there or if I can just walk away. I don't want to be involved in what seems like a disorganized mess, and I know if I don't take the job, I may need to find a new church. I'm feeling scared and overwhelmed, and I haven't responded to their last email because I don't know what to say. I could really use some guidance on how to navigate this situation.
