I was laid off just weeks before Diwali after working at a property management company in Gurgaon for only a few months. Initially, I was excited about the role, but I quickly realized that my team leader (TL) was not supportive. He seemed threatened by my position, which was similar to his, and intentionally withheld training and guidance. I had to rely on my colleagues to learn the ropes, which was frustrating given my prior experience. After nearly three months, I was given an unrealistic target of generating 2 lakh in revenue within just 5.5 days. The location I was managing simply couldn't produce that kind of revenue in such a short time frame, but my concerns fell on deaf ears. When the deadline came and I failed to meet the target, I was called into a meeting with the TL and the manager. They asked me what I had learned during my time there, and then requested a calculation task that I had never been trained on. I did my best, but it wasn't enough for the TL. Later that day, the manager approached me casually and asked if I was looking for new jobs, which felt like a clear indication that my time was up. Ironically, just before I learned about my layoff, the TL had jokingly asked me to buy him beer after work, mentioning that I owed him a party for my two salaries. I was furious at the insincerity of it all. Ultimately, I was made to resign, and I discovered that the TL was actually earning 8k less than me. It’s disheartening to realize how some colleagues can turn into adversaries from day one, ensuring your downfall.
