I recently had a pretty rough experience at my job at a bagel chain where I've been working since June 20th. I'm 16 and was initially excited about my first job, especially since the pay was decent at $11/hour plus tips. However, things took a turn right from the beginning. I had specifically asked my boss, a 41-year-old woman, for a dishwashing position because I work better in silence, but on my first day, she had me working the slicer, which is illegal for minors. I felt uncomfortable from the start, especially when I learned about her criminal history, which includes multiple felonies like identity fraud. During my shifts, I was asked to do a side job that turned out to be power washing at a stranger's house, and I was left alone to operate dangerous equipment without proper supervision. It was a bizarre and unsafe situation. When I returned to the restaurant, I overheard my boss talking negatively about me to her husband, saying I wasn't getting my job done and even suggested not giving me tips. This was really disheartening, especially since I know I was working hard and doing my best. To top it off, there were health violations at the store, and I suspect some shady financial practices happening with the cash register. Now, I'm feeling really uneasy about continuing at this job. I’m torn because I don’t want to quit and risk not getting paid for the hours I’ve worked, but I also don’t want to be in such a sketchy environment. I’m looking for advice on what to do next.
