I recently took a deep dive into the job market situation in Algeria, and it's pretty disheartening. As a 19-year-old, I’m feeling the weight of the statistics. With around 32 million people of working age, only about 13.5 million are either working or actively job hunting. The formal public sector employs 3.6 million, and the private sector has 3.4 million. Surprisingly, a massive 5 million people are in the informal market, which is about 40% of the workforce. Focusing on my age group, there are 7.8 million young people aged 15-24, but only 1.8 million have formal jobs. Approximately 600,000 are officially unemployed, while 3.4 million are either in school or not looking for work. The situation is even bleaker for college graduates. Each year, 200,000 graduates enter the market, but only about 750,000 secure formal jobs, leaving around 400,000 unemployed and another 450,000 working informally. This means that as a college graduate, I have only a 30-37% chance of landing a formal job in my field. The numbers are especially grim for those in smaller towns or specific majors. It’s frustrating to think about the years spent studying, only to face such tough odds in the job market. I’ve been considering my options and the possibility of relocating for better opportunities, even if it means taking on work that I might not find ideal.
