I was recently let go from my job after I refused to reclassify my position from remote to onsite. My former employer initiated a significant push to change the status of remote employees, and I filed a reasonable accommodation request to continue working remotely due to my responsibilities caring for my disabled child. Just a week later, I received a termination letter along with a notice of 60 days of pay. I thanked the HR representative, turned in my equipment, and left. After reaching out to several legal firms, I found that they all agreed I had a case, but none were willing to take it on due to the reputation of my employer. When I got my separation agreement, I decided to push back. I contacted the Employee Relations team and informed them that I wouldn't sign the agreement as advised by my attorney. I also mentioned that I could reach out to local news outlets about my situation, particularly how they terminated me after I requested an accommodation to care for my child, which would also leave a cancer survivor without insurance coverage for treatment. The next morning, I received a revised agreement offering me six months of pay and coverage for COBRA insurance costs. I accepted the new severance package and confirmed with my insurance provider that my coverage would continue. This experience has shown me that employees can have more power than they realize.
