I recently went through a significant career transition. After being contacted by a recruiter, I interviewed for a new role that offered a 50% salary increase. This was my first time quitting a job, so I sought advice from the recruiter about the possibility of receiving a counteroffer from my current employer. They suggested I be prepared for that, as it’s often a last-ditch effort to retain employees. When I submitted my two-week notice, I was honest with my manager about my decision to leave for a new position with a raise, though I didn’t disclose the specific amount. As word spread about my departure, several colleagues advised me to expect a counteroffer, which made me think there might be a chance they’d try to keep me. However, I never received any counteroffer. My team was very supportive and wished me well, but there was no attempt from management to retain me. Part of me is struggling with this, wondering if my employer was relieved to see me go or if they simply didn’t realize how much it would take to keep me. I’ve been trying to focus on my new role and channel these thoughts into my work, but I can’t shake the feeling of being dismissed. I’m curious if anyone else has had a similar experience with counteroffers and what you made of it. Did it affect your transition, or did you find it easier to move on?
