  1. 1

I recently found out that I will be leaving my job at a small company where I've been working for almost a year. My boss informed me that I would be let go at the end of summer, giving me about a month and a half notice. He has already hired my replacement, who is significantly older than me. I’m in my early 20s, and this has left me feeling confused about the whole situation. When I interviewed for this position, I emphasized the importance of proper training, and my boss assured me that I would receive it. Initially, he taught me the basics, but as time went on, I realized he was often unable to answer my questions or explain processes. The previous employee, who sadly passed away, had been the one with the knowledge of how everything operated. I ended up learning through trial and error, and by reaching out to others in the company. Despite the lack of formal training, I felt I was making progress, especially when my boss praised my work and asked me to take on full-time hours during the summer. He said my presence was valuable and that he felt comfortable leaving me in charge of the office. This made the news of my termination even more surprising. He mentioned that he now wants someone full-time, which I can understand, but he also called me 'too young' and 'irresponsible.' This was confusing because he had trusted me with significant responsibilities just weeks before. I’ve only made one major mistake, which was quickly addressed, and my boss didn't seem upset about it. The work environment was challenging; I often felt ignored or blamed for things I wasn't trained on. There was a lot of inconsistency in how tasks were handled, and I frequently found myself caught between my boss's preferences and the company's procedures. Now, despite saying I’m not fit for the role, my boss wants me to train my replacement. It feels contradictory, and I’m left questioning everything about my performance and the reasons behind my dismissal. I’m not looking for advice on what to do next; I just want to understand the rationale behind this situation.
