I was laid off over a year ago, and now I'm struggling with background checks during my job search. Every application seems to ask if I was fired, and I recently had an offer revoked because of my answer. I've been reading through advice online, and it seems like many people suggest that unless I disclose it, employers won't find out about my termination. However, I'm worried about the integrity of my applications. I’ve noticed that some applications specifically ask if I was fired from my last job, which complicates things. I’m considering avoiding companies that ask that question altogether, but I’m not sure if that’s the right approach. Any tips on how to navigate this situation would be greatly appreciated.

I recently experienced a setback in my job search after not passing a background check for a position at a large defense contractor. Despite having no criminal history, a solid credit score, and being a military veteran with a clearance, my offer was revoked. I was fired from a previous job within the last five years, but it wasn't for anything serious like time card fraud. I disclosed this information during the application process, which I now regret, especially since the background check didn't even flag that firing. I'm left wondering if this will affect my chances of ever applying to this company again.
